The involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke is termed as passive smoking. This second hand smoke is a mixture of smoke exhaled by smokers and smoke produced from the smoldering cigars, pipes, bidis and cigarettes. It is also termed as environmental tobacco smoke. Second hand smoke contains nicotine as well as various extremely harmful carcinogens and toxins.
Furthermore researches showed that there is an increased chance of lung cancer for people who have never smoked but who have been exposed to tobacco smoke. Passive smoking may also results in coronary heart disease and chronic respiratory symptoms. Passive smoking is responsible for nearly 8000 cases of asthma. The birth weight of babies born to passive smokers may be lower than those born to non-smokers. Passive smoking may also contain certain harmful substances and breakdown products of tobacco smoke in their body.
Moreover passive smoking doesn’t affect fertility or fecundity. There is no clear association between age at menopause and smoking. Passive smoking is as harmful as active smoking.
Several studies revealed that passive smoking may leads to an increased risk of still births and spontaneous abortions. The health hazards of passive smoking are many and undeniable. Its effect is serious, debilitating and life threatening. Thus it is better to stop, if someone is smoking in front of you
