Smoking is not only harmful for smokers but also for non-smokers. Recent research revealed that just like smokers, non smokers also have higher chances of suffering from several ailments due to exposure to the smoke exhaled by smokers. It is termed as passive smoking which involves the involuntary inhalation of tobacco smoke by a non-smoker, when in the company of a smoker.
The smoke exhaled by the smokers contains 30 times more harmful chemicals and toxic substances than the smoke inhaled by the smokers. It increases the chance of lung cancer, heart diseases as well as chest and throat infections.
Second hand smoke may results in premature death and several other diseases in non-smokers. It can cause respiratory complications including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchitis and asthma. Cancer and other cardiovascular diseases may also results due to passive smoking
Morever passive smoking is dangerous in case of children. In children, it can cause sudden infant death syndrome, ear infections, bronchitis, severe asthma, and pneumonia. Furthermore, it lowers the growth of their lungs and results in coughing, sneezing etc.
Passive smoking in case of pregnant lady is even more harmful. It can cause miscarriage, still birth, low birth weight and premature birth also.
Thus it is not wrong to say that think twice before you light up or let someone smoke a cigarette in your presence.
